What are Spring colours like?

Spring colour palette type bright splashy clear warm

Spring colours are known for their warmth, clarity and vibrancy. They’re cheerful, sunny colours — full of happiness and energy.

The Spring season is warm and clear, with shades ranging from juicy pastels to bold brights. Whether it's tropical blue, bubblegum pink, buttercup yellow or Kerry green, spring colours are all about bringing a pop of brightness and warmth to your wardrobe.

No matter what type of Spring you are, you can wear all the gorgeous colours in the palette. But when you know which sub-season you fall under, you’ll know which Spring hues to pop at the top of your shopping list.

So let’s find out more about each Spring sub-type.

Light Spring

The Light Spring sub-type (sometimes called Pale Spring) is characterised by its lightness, warmth, and brightness.

If you’re a Light Springs, you’re probably a picture of delicacy and radiance. You may have found yourself mistaken for a Summer in the past — fair, low-contrast features and light eyes are easy to misdiagnose! Don’t be fooled by delicate features though, these Springs are still full of the warmth and clarity of their season.

Light Springs sit closer towards the cool, light, and soft Summer palette than Autumn or Winter palettes. While your best colours are warm, they’re also soft and light — Spring tints like light dove grey and sweet pastel shades like shell pink, mint green, and light peach, will look beautiful on you.

When putting together an outfit, Light Springs should aim for a softer look. Instead of going for bold contrast, stick to tonal outfits with a pop of a particularly light or bright colour.

Bright Spring

For those in the Bright Spring category, clarity and vibrancy is the name of the game. Bright Springs are like a ray of sunshine — they boast a warm, light appearance, but their stunning brightness is what sets them apart.

Also known as Blue Springs, Bright Springs tend to have darker hair than usual, and a striking level of contrast between skin, hair, and eye colour. As a Bright Spring, you might find yourself mistaken for a Winter at first guess.

As the coolest and least yellow-toned Spring sub-season, the Bright Spring palette sits closer to Winter than Summer or Autumn. Clear, bright blues, vibrant yellows, mouthwatering pinks, and true red are some of the best colours for this sub-type.

To show off your Bright Spring features, aim for a high-contrast look with a mix of light and dark tones, as well as eye-catching colour combinations. For a Bright Spring, there really is no such thing as “too bright!”

Warm Spring

Also referred to as Golden Springs, the defining feature of a Warm Spring is your warmth and the dominance of yellow tones in your palette.

You’ll often see warm Springs with golden blonde, strawberry blonde, or bright red / ginger hair; and eye colours like green, blue, or light hazel.

Warm Spring falls at the warmest, most yellow-toned end of the Spring colour spectrum. Its nearest neighbour on the colour wheel is Autumn, although Warm Springs need clarity rather than subtlety.

The best colours to complement a Warm Spring complexion include leaf green, buttercup yellow, bright coral, poppy red, and a wealth of browns, from spicy gingernut and cinnamon to biscuity beige tints.

While many Springs benefit from contrasting colours in their outfits, Warm Springs may prefer a tonal approach to outfit-building.

True Spring

True Springs are what we’d consider the ‘purest’ form of Spring — they sit smack-bang in the middle of the Spring palette, combining warmth, clarity and brightness in one sunny, splashy, tropical-looking package!

When it comes to looks, True Springs are the most ‘obviously’ Springs. With a harmonious skin tone that radiates warmth, and features like warm golden blonde hair and bright blue eyes, you embody the epitome of the classic spring look. Of course, True Springs come in all skin tones, including deeper hues — the key is to look for that warmth, lightness, and brightness.

True Springs don’t ‘lean’ towards any other palettes — they look perfect in all the loudest and loveliest Spring colours, like bright blue, flamingo pink, orange, turquoise and leaf green. It’s no surprise that the House of Colour system refers to True Springs as Paintbox Springs!

When pulling together an outfit, you have a natural flair for colour blocking. Whether it's pairing a neutral with a bright (or two…or three!) or making like a rainbow, your combinations should always be eye-catching. And if you need a little extra boost, try adding even more contrast — you’ll shine even brighter.
